We are at the beginning of almost everything basically. Naruto and characters are Academy Students.
No Shippidun or anything, Academy Students.
If you want a Canon, make sure you only put the past they've had so far before they are in the Academy. Then stop there. If there Personality changes in Shippidun or something, put the first personality.
That should cover that. Nice and simple. :)
